Final Breakthrough under the Gotthard
Final Breakthrough between Faido and Sedrun
Provided all goes as planned, on October 15, 2010, the Final Breakthrough of the Gotthard Base Tunnel will take place between Faido and Sedrun.
At 2.00 pm, the tunnel boring machine in the east tunnel will start turning. Approaching from Faido, the tunnel boring machine will break through into the so-called dismantling cavern on the Sedrun side of the tunnel. The cavern was constructed to allow subsequent dismantling of the 450-metres-long tunnel boring machine.
The Breakthrough Point will be at tunnel metre 127,404.
Miners after the breakthrough between Erstfeld and Amsteg on June 16, 2009
As soon as Breakthrough has taken place, the miners from the Faido side will climb through the manhole of the tunnel boring machine and shake hands with their colleagues on the Sedrun side.
